Electronic Power Steering (EPS)

EPS is the energy saving scheme, a luxury feature in the vehicle which reduces the steering efforts. It saves the energy usage and enhances flexibility of location of steering system in modern vehicles over the hydraulic power steering.

Working of Electronic power steering (EPS)

When the driver steers, the torque sensor senses the amount of torque provided by the driver on the steering wheel. The torque sensor is incorporated in the steering column and the information from the torque sensor is fetch into the steering module (controller) by the help of electric circuit. The engine speed is fetch by Engine control unit to the steering module in order to adjust the sensitivity. The controller on the basis of torque and engine speed control algorithm generates a signal, drives the electric motor to provide steering assistance. The power to motor is provided from the vehicle battery. The angle of rotation is the feedback to EPS control system, and is used to adjust sensitivity and performance around the null position of steering wheel.

Advantages of Electronic power steering

  1. Little power or no power is wasted when the vehicle is running straight (no steering).
  2. Extremely compact, light and requires little maintenance.
  3. Can be easily tuned to requirements of particular size and type of vehicle, and even to driver’s habits.
  4. Can be used even in small vehicles.
  5. Programmable steering response also allows return-to-center action which can eliminate steering, suspension alignment (caster angle) and kickback action over rough surface.
